Cortázar's compositions include works for orchestra, chamber music, and solo piano. He wrote several zarzuelas, a type of Spanish musical theater, and was a prolific composer of popular songs. He was also a conductor and arranger. Cortázar's works have been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic.
