Ernő Söptei is a Hungarian sprint canoeist who competed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He won a gold medal in the K-2 1000 m event at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. Ernő Söptei was born on 12 February 1925 in Budapest, Hungary. He was the son of a Hungarian army officer. He began his career in canoeing in 1941, when he joined the Hungarian National Canoeing Team. Ernő Söptei was a member of the Hungarian National Canoeing Team from 1941 to 1952. During this time, he won several medals in international competitions, including a gold medal in the K-2 1000 m event at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. He also won a bronze medal in the K-2 1000 m event at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. Ernő Söptei retired from competitive canoeing in 1952 and went on to become a successful coach. He coached the Hungarian National Canoeing Team from 1952 to 1972. During this time, he coached several Olympic medalists, including his son, Ernő Söptei Jr., who won a gold medal in the K-2 1000 m event at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.
