Esteban Moctezuma is a Mexican politician and diplomat who served as the Secretary of Education in the cabinet of President Vicente Fox from 2000 to 2003. He was also the Secretary of Social Development in the cabinet of President Felipe Calderón from 2006 to 2009. Moctezuma was born in Mexico City on 21 October 1954. He studied law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and obtained a master's degree in public administration from Harvard University. Moctezuma began his career in public service in the late 1970s, when he was appointed as a legal advisor to the Mexican Senate. He then served as the Undersecretary of Education in the cabinet of President Carlos Salinas de Gortari from 1994 to 1997. In 2000, Moctezuma was appointed as the Secretary of Education in the cabinet of President Vicente Fox. During his tenure, he implemented a number of reforms to the Mexican education system, including the introduction of a new curriculum and the expansion of access to higher education. In 2006, Moctezuma was appointed as the Secretary of Social Development in the cabinet of President Felipe Calderón. During his tenure, he implemented a number of social programs aimed at reducing poverty and inequality in Mexico. Moctezuma is currently the president of the Mexican Council on Foreign Relations. He is also a member of the board of directors of several companies, including Grupo Televisa and Grupo Financiero Banorte. Esteban Moctezuma Barragán (born 21 October 1954 in Mexico City) is a Mexican politician formerly affiliated with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and is currently a member of MORENA. He is a former senator and served as secretary of social development and secretary of the interior in the cabinet of President Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León. From that position, early in January 1995, he pursued peace talks in Chiapas with the EZLN insurgents; in February the government pursued a strategy of military intervention, followed by a resumption of peace talks with the insurgents. In 2018, he was appointed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador as Secretary of Education.
