Eugenio Barba is an Italian theatre director, theorist, and founder of the Odin Teatret in Holstebro, Denmark. He was born in 1936 in Salento, Italy. He is best known for his work in developing the "Theatre of the Oppressed" and his theories on theatre anthropology. Barba studied at the University of Rome and the University of Padua, where he received his degree in philosophy in 1961. He then went on to study theatre in Paris, where he was influenced by the works of Antonin Artaud and Jerzy Grotowski. In 1964, Barba founded the Odin Teatret in Holstebro, Denmark. The theatre was dedicated to exploring the relationship between theatre and anthropology, and Barba developed the concept of "Theatre of the Oppressed" which focused on the use of theatre as a tool for social change. Barba has written numerous books on theatre and anthropology, including The Floating Island (1973), The Paper Canoe (1975), and The Secret Art of the Performer (1985). He has also lectured extensively around the world and has been awarded numerous awards for his work, including the Erasmus Prize in 2004.
