Ewa Damek is a Polish mathematician who was born on 9 August, 1958 in Poland. She is a professor of mathematics at the University of Warsaw and a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Damek is known for her work in the field of functional analysis, particularly in the area of harmonic analysis. She has also made contributions to the theory of Banach spaces, operator theory, and probability theory. Damek received her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Warsaw in 1983. She has held visiting positions at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Paris-Sud, and the University of Rome. She has also been a visiting professor at the University of Michigan and the University of Toronto. Damek has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Stefan Banach Medal from the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2002, the Stefan Banach Prize from the Polish Mathematical Society in 2003, and the Stefan Banach Prize from the European Mathematical Society in 2004. She was also awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta in 2005. Damek is married and has two children.

In 1992, with Fulvio Ricci, Damek published a family of counterexamples to a form of the Lichnerowicz conjecture according to which harmonic Riemannian manifolds must be locally symmetric. The asymmetric spaces they found as counterexamples are at least seven-dimensional; they are called Damek–Ricci spaces.

1977

She studied mathematics at the University of Wrocław beginning in 1977, and completed a doctorate under the supervision of Andrzej Hulanicki [pl] in 1987. After a stint at the University of Georgia in the US, she returned to Wrocław, where she became a full professor in 2000.
