F.W. de Klerk is a South African politician who served as the seventh and last State President of apartheid-era South Africa from 1989 to 1994. He was also the leader of the National Party (NP) from 1989 to 1997. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, along with Nelson Mandela, for his role in the ending of apartheid. De Klerk was born in Johannesburg on 18 March 1936. He studied law at Potchefstroom University and was admitted to the bar in 1958. He was elected to the House of Assembly in 1972 and became leader of the NP in February 1989. In 1990, de Klerk began negotiations with the African National Congress (ANC) to end apartheid and introduce a new constitution. In 1993, he and Mandela were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to end apartheid. De Klerk retired from politics in 1997 and has since been involved in various business and philanthropic activities. He is the founder of the F.W. de Klerk Foundation, which promotes peace, democracy, and human rights in South Africa. He is also a member of the Global Leadership Foundation, which works to promote good governance and human rights around the world.
