Fontella Bass is an American soul and R&B singer and songwriter best known for her 1965 hit single, "Rescue Me". She began her career singing gospel music as a child, and later sang with the Clara Ward Singers. She signed with Chess Records in 1965 and released her first single, "Recue Me", which became a number one hit on the R&B charts and a top ten hit on the pop charts. She released several more singles with Chess, including "Soul of the Man" and "Recovery". In the 1970s, Bass moved to Paris, where she continued to record and perform. She released several albums in Europe, including the critically acclaimed "No Ways Tired". She returned to the United States in the 1980s and released several more albums, including "The New Look" and "Free". Bass has been inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame and the St. Louis Music Hall of Fame. She continues to perform and record, and her most recent album, "The Best of Fontella Bass", was released in 2017.
