Forugh Farrokhzad was an Iranian poet and film director. She was born on 5 January 1935 in Tehran, Iran. She was the daughter of Colonel Mohammad Bagher Farrokhzad and his wife, Touran Vaziri. She had two brothers, Iraj and Keyghobad, and a sister, Parvin. Forugh Farrokhzad was educated at the Tehran American School and the University of Tehran, where she studied Persian literature. She began writing poetry at the age of 16 and published her first collection of poems, The Captive, in 1955. Forugh Farrokhzad was a pioneer of modern Persian poetry and is widely regarded as one of the most influential poets of the 20th century. She was also a filmmaker, and her short film The House is Black won the International Critics Prize at the 1963 Venice Film Festival. Forugh Farrokhzad died in a car accident in 1967, at the age of 32. She is remembered as one of the most important figures in modern Iranian literature.
