Francis Bebey was a Cameroonian composer, singer, and writer. He was born in Douala, Cameroon, on 15 July 1929. He was a pioneer in African music, combining traditional Cameroonian music with jazz, folk, and pop. He wrote over 300 songs, including the hit "Agatha," which was featured in the film The Gods Must Be Crazy. He also wrote several books, including African Music: A People's Art and African Acoustic. Bebey was a professor of music at the University of Yaoundé in Cameroon. He was also a member of the International Music Council of UNESCO. He was awarded the Order of Merit of Cameroon in 1983. Bebey died on 28 May 2001 in Paris, France. He was 71 years old.
