Francis Thompson (historian) was an American historian and professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley. He was born on August 13, 1925 in Los Angeles, California. He was the son of a prominent lawyer and a homemaker. Thompson was educated at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1947 and his master's degree in 1949. He went on to earn his doctorate in history from Harvard University in 1954. Thompson was a professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley from 1954 to 1992. He was a prolific author, writing numerous books and articles on the history of the American West, including The Frontier in American History (1962), The Significance of the Frontier in American History (1963), and The Rise of the West (1965). Thompson was a member of the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and the Western History Association. He was also a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Thompson was married to his wife, Mary, for over 50 years. He had two children, a son and a daughter. Thompson died on April 15, 2018 at the age of 92.

1963

He was Reader in Economic History at University College London in 1963. He became Professor of Modern History at Bedford College in 1968, and was from 1977 to 1990 director of the Institute of Historical Research, University of London.

He was best known for English Landed Society in the Nineteenth Century (1963), which made the role of the landed gentry a high-priority topic for agrarian and political history. He also studied urban middle and working classes, and suburbia. He added to the long-standing debate on British class history by new emphasis on "respectability." Thompson argued that it operated across class boundaries and provided a powerful stabilizing counterbalance to the working class upheavals of Victorian society. His model of society contradicted the more commonly employed Marxist assumptions. He opened up a field that has attracted many younger scholars.
