Franco Solinas was an Italian screenwriter and film director. He was born in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy, on 19 January 1927. He was best known for his work on the films The Battle of Algiers (1966) and The Mattei Affair (1972). Solinas began his career as a journalist and then moved into screenwriting. He wrote the screenplay for The Battle of Algiers, which was directed by Gillo Pontecorvo and won the Golden Lion at the 1966 Venice Film Festival. He also wrote the screenplay for The Mattei Affair, which was directed by Francesco Rosi and won the Palme d'Or at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival. Solinas also directed two films, The Fifth Cord (1971) and The Working Class Goes to Heaven (1972). He died in Rome on 8 April 1982.

Franco Solinas (19 January 1927 - 14 September 1982) was an Italian writer and screenwriter. He is best known for the screenplay of The Battle of Algiers, which was nominated for three Academy Awards. He also wrote the 1969 historical drama ¡Queimada!, starring Marlon Brando. Both films were directed by Gillo Pontecorvo.
