François Truffaut was a French film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and film critic. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential directors of the French New Wave. He was born on 6 February 1932 in Paris, France.
Truffaut began his career as a film critic, writing for the influential film magazine Cahiers du cinéma. He was a major proponent of the auteur theory, which holds that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision. He directed his first feature film, The 400 Blows, in 1959. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Truffaut won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Truffaut went on to direct a number of acclaimed films, including Jules and Jim (1962), The Soft Skin (1964), Stolen Kisses (1968), and Day for Night (1973). He also wrote and directed the science fiction classic, Fahrenheit 451 (1966).
Truffaut died of a brain tumor in 1984. He was 52 years old.
