Françoise Riopelle is a Canadian choreographer and dancer who has been active in the performing arts since the 1950s. She is best known for her work with the National Ballet of Canada, where she was a principal dancer from 1956 to 1965. She has also choreographed for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Royal Ballet of London, and the National Ballet of Canada. Riopelle was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on 18 June 1927. She began her dance training at the age of seven, studying with the renowned Russian teacher, Boris Volkoff. She went on to study at the National Ballet School in Toronto, and in 1956 she joined the National Ballet of Canada as a principal dancer. Riopelle has choreographed over 30 works for the National Ballet of Canada, including the full-length ballets Romeo and Juliet (1965), Cinderella (1966), and The Nutcracker (1968). She has also choreographed for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Royal Ballet of London, and the National Ballet of Canada. Riopelle has been awarded numerous honours for her contributions to the performing arts, including the Order of Canada (1977), the Governor General's Performing Arts Award (1996), and the Prix de la Danse de Montréal (1998).
