Frank Bellamy was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire. He served in the British Army during the Second World War, then worked in art studios in Kettering and Fleet Street prior to becoming a freelance picture strip illustrator. He established himself as one of the leading dramatic illustrators of his time, with his work appearing in the Swift, Eagle, Mickey Mouse Weekly and TV21 comics, the Sunday Times Magazine, the Radio Times and the Daily Mirror. His accomplishments were recognised when he was made a Fellow of the Society of Industrial Artists and he received the Best Foreign Artist award from the American Academy of Comic Book Arts in 1972.
