Frank J. Matrango is a retired educator and administrator who served as the superintendent of the San Diego Unified School District from 1975 to 1983. He was born on July 19, 1926, in San Diego, California. He attended San Diego State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1949. He went on to earn a master's degree in educational administration from the University of Southern California in 1952. Matrango began his career as a teacher in the San Diego Unified School District in 1949. He was promoted to principal in 1959 and served in that role until 1971. He was then appointed assistant superintendent of the district, a position he held until 1975 when he was appointed superintendent. During his tenure as superintendent, Matrango oversaw the district's desegregation efforts and the implementation of a new curriculum. He retired from the district in 1983. Matrango has been honored for his contributions to education in San Diego. He was inducted into the San Diego County Education Hall of Fame in 2004 and was awarded the San Diego County Superintendent of the Year Award in 1982. He is also a member of the San Diego State University Alumni Hall of Fame.
