Fred J. Balshofer was an American film director, cinematographer, and producer. He was born on November 2, 1877 in New York City, New York, USA. He began his career in the film industry in 1909, working as a cinematographer for the Edison Company. He went on to direct and produce a number of films, including The Great Train Robbery (1912), The Birth of a Nation (1915), and The Lost World (1925). He also worked as a cinematographer on a number of films, including The Ten Commandments (1923). Balshofer was married to actress and screenwriter Ruth Stonehouse. He died on April 28, 1956 in Los Angeles, California, USA. He was 78 years old.
