Fred Macaulay is a Scottish radio producer and presenter. He was born on 1 January 1925 in Sollas, North Uist, Scotland. He is best known for his long-running BBC Radio Scotland show, Macaulay and Co. Macaulay began his career in radio in the 1950s, working for the BBC in Scotland. He was the first presenter of the BBC's flagship radio show, The Archers, and was the first presenter of the BBC's long-running radio show, Macaulay and Co. Macaulay has been a regular presenter on BBC Radio Scotland since the 1970s, and has presented a variety of programmes, including Macaulay and Co, Macaulay's People, and Macaulay's Music. He has also presented a number of television programmes, including the BBC's Scotland's Music and Scotland's People. Macaulay has been awarded an MBE for his services to broadcasting, and was inducted into the Radio Academy Hall of Fame in 2011. Macaulay was born in North Uist in 1925. He attended the Inverness Royal Academy. During World War Two, he served with the Royal Corps of Signals and the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. He then studied at the University of Edinburgh, earning a Master of Arts in Celtic Studies and a diploma in phonetics. He joined the BBC Gaelic department in 1954 and became head of the department in 1964. In 1980, he became manager of BBC Highland, based in Inverness, before retiring on 1 July 1983. In his time at the BBC, Gaelic broadcasting on BBC Radio increased tenfold, from 1.5 hours to 15 hours per week. Macaulay was also responsible for Gaelic programs on TV, including current affairs, and the light entertainment series Se Ur Beatha ('You're welcome'). Macaulay also appointed the first woman in the BBC Gaelic department.
