Bayldon was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, on 7 January 1924. He attended Leeds Grammar School and then trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Bayldon's first major role was in the television series Catweazle, which ran from 1970 to 1971. He played the title character, a medieval wizard who is accidentally transported to the 20th century. He also appeared in the television series The Avengers, playing the recurring role of Professor Jameson in the episodes "The House That Jack Built" and "The Superlative Seven". Bayldon also appeared in the Doctor Who television series, playing the recurring role of the Celestial Toymaker in the episodes "The Celestial Toymaker" and "The Nightmare Fair". He also appeared in the Doctor Who spin-off series K-9 and Company, playing the role of Professor Gryffen. Bayldon has also appeared in numerous films, including The Man Who Haunted Himself (1970), The House That Dripped Blood (1971), The Creeping Flesh (1973), and The Monster Club (1980).
