She was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP). She was a leader in the struggle against apartheid and a prominent figure in the South African liberation movement. Gertrude Shope was a teacher by profession and was actively involved in the struggle against apartheid. She was a member of the ANC Women's League and was a leader in the Defiance Campaign of 1952. She was also a member of the ANC's National Executive Committee and was a leader in the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe. Gertrude Shope was arrested in 1963 and sentenced to life imprisonment for her involvement in the struggle against apartheid. She was released in 1985 and continued to be active in the ANC and the SACP. She was a member of the ANC's National Executive Committee until her death in 2013.
