Timeline
All these short subjects were found again in 1975 and have been preserved since.
In 1924, film pioneer Auguste Lumière (1862-1954) recognized the significance of professor Marinescu's films: "I've seen your scientific reports about the usage of cinematograph in studies of nervous illnesses, when I was still receiving La Semaine Médicale, but back then I had other concerns, which left me no spare time to begin biological studies. I must say I forgot those works and I am thankful to you that you reminded them to me. Unfortunately, not many scientists have followed your way. " Other Romanian doctors of the period (like A. I. Bolintineanu and Iaon Athanasiu) were equally enthusiastic about the use of film in medical studies.
Marinescu called his works "studies with the help of the cinematograph", and published the results, along with several consecutive frames, in issues of the 'La Semaine Médicale' magazine in Paris, between 1899 and 1902.
Between July 1898 and 1901, Marinescu made the first science films in the world in his clinic in Bucharest: "The Walking Difficulties of Organic Hemiplegy" (1898), "The Walking Difficulties of Organic Paraplegies" (1899), "A Case of Hysteric Hemiplegy Cured Through Hypnosis" (1899), "The Walking Difficulties of Progressive Locomotion Ataxy" (1900) and "Pseudo-Hypertrophic or Myosclerotic Paralysis Among Myopathies" (1901).
After nine years abroad, Marinescu returned in 1897 to Bucharest, where he received his doctorate and created a new professorial department at Pantelimon Hospital.
In 1897, a chair of Clinical Neurology was created for him at the University of Bucharest. He remained in this post for the next 41 years and is regarded as the founder of the Romanian School of Neurology. Marinescu always used the latest methods as they became available, especially the Röntgen ray, with which he investigated bone changes in acromegaly, and the cinematograph, for the study of body movements in health and disease.
Gheorghe Marinescu (1863-1938) was an influential Romanian neorologist. Marinescu was a pioneer and understood earlier than anybody else how to use film as a tool for scientific research. He studied Medicine at the University of Bucharest and worked then at universities in Germany and France.
