Gianfranco Lazzer is an Italian sprinter who was born on 4 July, 1955 in San Stino di Livenza, Italy. He is best known for his success in the 400m and 800m events. He won a bronze medal in the 400m at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, and a silver medal in the 800m at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Lazzer began his career as a sprinter in the late 1970s, and quickly rose to prominence in the Italian athletics scene. He won the 400m at the 1979 Mediterranean Games, and the 800m at the 1981 European Athletics Championships. He also won the 400m at the 1982 European Athletics Indoor Championships. In addition to his Olympic success, Lazzer also won a gold medal in the 400m at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki, and a bronze medal in the 800m at the 1987 World Championships in Rome. He also won a gold medal in the 400m at the 1986 European Athletics Championships. Lazzer retired from competitive athletics in 1989, and has since become a successful coach. He currently coaches the Italian national athletics team.
