Giovanni Viola was an Italian professional footballer who played as a defender. He was born on 20 June 1926 in San Benigno Canavese, Italy. Viola began his career with his hometown club, San Benigno Canavese, before joining Torino in 1945. He made his debut for the club in the 1946–47 season and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club, winning the Serie A title in 1948 and the Coppa Italia in 1949. In 1954, Viola joined Sampdoria, where he made over 100 appearances and won the Coppa Italia in 1957. He retired from professional football in 1959. Viola was also a member of the Italian national team, making his debut in 1948 and going on to make 11 appearances for the Azzurri. During his club career, Viola played for Italian side Juventus from 1945 to 1958. He was brought in as a replacement for Lucidio Sentimenti (IV), and made 246 appearances for the Turin club, winning the Scudetto on three occasions: in 1950, 1952 and 1958. He also played for Carrarese, Como, Lucchese, and Brescia.
