Gisèle Halimi is a French lawyer, feminist, and activist. She was born in La Goulette, Tunisia, on 27 July 1927. She is best known for her involvement in the defense of the French-Algerian activist Djamila Bouhired, who was sentenced to death in 1957 for her involvement in the Algerian War of Independence. Halimi was also a founding member of the Mouvement de Libération des Femmes (MLF), a French feminist organization. Halimi studied law at the University of Paris and was admitted to the Paris Bar in 1954. She was a prominent figure in the defense of Djamila Bouhired, and her efforts were successful in having Bouhired's death sentence commuted to life imprisonment. Halimi was also involved in the defense of other Algerian activists, including Ali Boumendjel and Saïd Boumendjel. In 1970, Halimi founded the MLF, which was dedicated to the advancement of women's rights in France. She was also a founding member of the International Association of Women Jurists, and served as its president from 1975 to 1979. Halimi has written several books, including La Cause des Femmes (1973), La Cause des Femmes: Une Histoire du Féminisme (1975), and La Cause des Femmes: Une Autre Histoire (1977). She has also written extensively on the Algerian War of Independence and the French-Algerian conflict. Halimi has received numerous awards for her work, including the Legion of Honor in 2002 and the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit in 2004. She was also awarded the Simone de Beauvoir Prize in 2006.
