He is best known for his achievements in the sport of pole vaulting, having won the Italian National Championship in the event in 1951 and 1952. He also competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, where he finished in sixth place. Chiesa began his career as a vaulter in the late 1940s, and quickly rose to prominence in the sport. He was a member of the Italian National Team from 1951 to 1954, and won the Italian National Championship in 1951 and 1952.
