Gjert Wilhelmsen was a Norwegian shipping magnate and philanthropist. He was the founder of Wilh. Wilhelmsen, one of the world's largest shipping companies. He was born in Oslo, Norway, on 12 February 1927. Gjert Wilhelmsen was educated at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration. He began his career in the shipping industry in 1948, when he joined the family business, Wilh. Wilhelmsen. He was appointed managing director of the company in 1954, and chairman of the board in 1965. Gjert Wilhelmsen was a major philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to various causes. He was a major supporter of the Norwegian Red Cross, and was a patron of the Norwegian Opera. He was also a major donor to the Norwegian Cancer Society, and was a major supporter of the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. Gjert Wilhelmsen passed away on 28 April 2018, at the age of 91. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
