Gordon Preston was born on 28 April, 1925 in Workington, United Kingdom. He was a British Army officer who served in the Second World War and later became a successful businessman. He was educated at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1945. He served in the British Army of the Rhine and in the Middle East before being posted to the Far East in 1951. He left the army in 1954 and joined the family business, Preston & Co, a manufacturer of industrial valves. He was managing director of the company from 1959 to 1985 and chairman from 1985 to 1995. He was a member of the Institute of Directors and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. He was also a member of the Royal British Legion and the Workington Rotary Club. He was married to his wife, Margaret, for over 60 years and had two sons and two daughters. He died on 28 April, 2015 at the age of 90.
