Griselda Pollock is a South African-born British art historian, cultural analyst, and Professor of Social and Critical Histories of Art at the University of Leeds. She is best known for her theoretical work on the intersections of gender, race, and visual culture. Pollock was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, and moved to England in 1965. She studied at the University of Sussex, where she received her BA in 1970 and her PhD in 1975. She then taught at the University of Reading and the University of Leeds, where she is currently a professor. Pollock has written extensively on the history of art, feminism, and visual culture. Her books include Vision and Difference: Femininity, Feminism and Histories of Art (1988), Differencing the Canon: Feminist Desire and the Writing of Art's Histories (1999), Encounters in the Virtual Feminist Museum: Time, Space and the Archive (2007), and Generations and Geographies in the Visual Arts: Feminist Readings (1996). She has also edited several collections of essays, including Framing Feminism: Art and the Women's Movement 1970-1985 (1987) and Generations and Geographies in the Visual Arts: Feminist Readings (1996). Pollock has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Women's Art History Prize from the College Art Association in 1989, the Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship in 2000, and the International Association of Art Critics Award for Best Art Book in 2007.
