He is best known for his works in the fantasy genre, including The Fionavar Tapestry, Tigana, A Song for Arbonne, and The Lions of Al-Rassan. Kay attended the University of Toronto, where he studied philosophy and English literature. After graduating, he worked as a personal assistant to author Christopher Tolkien, helping him to edit his father J.R.R. Tolkien's posthumous works. Kay has written numerous novels, including The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire, The Darkest Road, and The Last Light of the Sun. He has also written several non-fiction works, including The Last Light of the Sun: A Companion to the Novel and The Fionavar Tapestry: The Complete Trilogy. Kay has won numerous awards for his work, including the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1995 for Tigana, the International Goliardos Prize for Best Fantasy Novel in 2006 for Ysabel, and the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2014.
