H.R. Bishop was an English composer and conductor who was active in the early 19th century. He is best known for his work in the theatre, particularly for his operas and ballets. He was also a prolific composer of songs and instrumental music. Bishop was born in London and studied music at the Royal Academy of Music. He was appointed as the musical director of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1813, and held the post until 1820. During this time, he composed a number of operas and ballets, including The Miller and His Men (1814), The Magic Oak (1815), and The Fairy of the Lake (1817). He also wrote a number of songs, including the popular "Home, Sweet Home". Bishop left Drury Lane in 1820 and went on to become the musical director of the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. He held this post until 1835, during which time he composed a number of operas and ballets, including The Corsair (1822), The Magic Flute (1824), and The Magic Harp (1827). He also wrote a number of songs, including the popular "The Last Rose of Summer". Bishop died in London in 1855. He is remembered as one of the most important composers of the early 19th century.
