Conklin was born in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Philipsburg-Osceola High School in 1976. He attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1980. Conklin began his career in the financial services industry in 1980, working as a financial analyst for the investment banking firm of Drexel Burnham Lambert. He then joined the investment banking firm of Kidder, Peabody & Co. in 1982, where he worked as a financial analyst and later as a vice president in the firm's mergers and acquisitions department. In 1988, Conklin founded Conklin & Company, a financial services firm that provides investment banking, venture capital, and private equity services. The firm has offices in New York, London, and Hong Kong. Conklin is also the founder and chairman of the Conklin Foundation, a philanthropic organization that supports education, health, and economic development initiatives. He is a member of the board of directors of the New York City Ballet and the New York Philharmonic. Conklin is married and has two children. He currently resides in New York City.
