He attended the University of Oslo and graduated with a degree in political science. He then went on to become a teacher and later a school principal. In 1973, he was elected to the Norwegian Parliament and served until 1989. During his time in Parliament, he was a member of the Standing Committee on Education and Research and the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs. He was also a member of the Norwegian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly from 1975 to 1989. In addition to his political career, he has also been involved in various organizations, including the Norwegian Red Cross, the Norwegian Refugee Council, and the Norwegian Human Rights Fund.
