He also served as an assistant coach at the University of Florida, the University of Maryland, and the University of South Carolina. Norton was a three-sport athlete at Huntington High School, playing football, basketball, and baseball. He attended Marshall University, where he played football and baseball. He graduated in 1950 with a degree in physical education. Norton began his coaching career at Marshall in 1951, where he served as an assistant coach for the football and baseball teams. He then moved on to the University of Florida, where he served as an assistant coach for the football and baseball teams from 1954 to 1959. Norton then moved on to the University of Maryland, where he served as an assistant coach for the football and baseball teams from 1960 to 1969. In 1970, he was hired as the head coach of the University of Miami Hurricanes. He served in that position until 1972. Norton then moved on to the University of South Carolina, where he served as an assistant coach for the football and baseball teams from 1973 to 1975. He then returned to Marshall University, where he served as an assistant coach for the football and baseball teams from 1976 to 1978. Norton retired from coaching in 1978.
