Hans Hartung was a German-French painter and printmaker. He was one of the leading figures of the post-war abstract expressionist movement. He was born in Leipzig, Germany, and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. He moved to Paris in 1930, where he was influenced by the Surrealists and Cubists. He was a member of the Abstraction-Création group and the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles. Hartung's work is characterized by gestural brushstrokes and a vibrant palette. He often used a variety of media, including oil, gouache, ink, and collage. He also experimented with various techniques, such as dripping, spattering, and staining. His work was exhibited widely in Europe and the United States. Hans Hartung died in 1989 in Antibes, France. He was 85 years old.
