He has exhibited his work in numerous galleries and museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Burgert studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts from 1949 to 1953, and then moved to Paris in 1954. He has lived and worked in Paris ever since. He has also traveled extensively, visiting countries such as India, Japan, and the United States. Burgert has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Grand Prix National des Arts Plastiques in France in 1988, and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1995.
