Hans Mayer was a German writer and literary critic. He was born on 19 March 1907 in Cologne, Germany. He studied philosophy, literature, and art history at the universities of Cologne, Berlin, and Freiburg. He was a professor of German literature at the University of Freiburg from 1945 to 1972. Mayer was a prolific writer, publishing more than 50 books and numerous articles. His works include studies of German literature, literary criticism, and essays on philosophy and art. He was a member of the German Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Mayer was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1972. He died on 28 April 2001 in Freiburg, Germany.
