Harivansh Rai Bachchan was an Indian poet of the Nayi Kavita literary movement of early 20th century Hindi literature. He is best known for his early work Madhushala, a collection of 135 quatrains. He was also a noted poet of the Hindi Kavi Sammelan. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honour, in 1976. Bachchan was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, to a Hindu family. He was educated at Allahabad University, where he earned a master's degree in English literature. He began writing poetry in the 1920s, and his first collection of poems, Madhushala, was published in 1935. Bachchan was a prolific writer, and his works include several collections of poetry, essays, and short stories. He also wrote several plays, including the popular play, Madhushala. He was a member of the Indian People's Theatre Association, and his plays were performed in various cities in India. Bachchan was also a noted public speaker, and he was invited to speak at various universities and literary festivals. He was a strong advocate of Hindi literature, and he was a member of the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan, a literary organization dedicated to promoting Hindi literature. Bachchan was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1976 for his contribution to Hindi literature. He died in 2003 at the age of 95.
