He was also a pioneer in the field of wireless telegraphy. He began his career as an actor, appearing in several plays and films. He then moved into inventing, and in 1921 he patented the death ray, a device that could supposedly shoot down aircraft from a distance. The invention was never put into use, however, and it was later revealed to be a hoax. In the 1920s, he also developed a wireless telegraphy system, which he demonstrated in London in 1924. He was awarded a patent for the system in 1925. In addition to his inventions, Matthews was also a prolific writer, publishing several books on science and technology.
