Influential in the world of music during the first half of the twentieth century, he was, in addition to being a composer/conductor, Associate Conductor of the New York Philharmonic for many years, a distinguished musical educator (Meredith Willson was one of his students), and first director of the Tanglewood Festival in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He was also a pioneer in music on film, leading the orchestra for 1926's "Don Juan," the first feature film to have a synchronized musical score, and leading the New York Philharmonic in one of the sound shorts that was shown at the film's premiere showing in New York.

Educated at Tufts College (Mus. D) and St. Paul's School in Garden City, NY (1925), he also studied music with Stephen Emery, George Chadwick and Eusebius Mandyczewski.
