Hermann Bahr was an Austrian writer, playwright, and critic. He was born in Linz, Austria, on 19 July 1863. He studied law at the University of Vienna and worked as a journalist for several newspapers. He wrote plays, novels, and essays, and was a major figure in the literary life of Vienna. He was a member of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists and writers who sought to create a new style of art and literature. He was also a member of the German Academy of Arts and Sciences. Bahr's works include the plays Der Weg ins Freie (The Way to Freedom, 1895) and Der Ewige (The Eternal, 1901), the novel Die Ehe (Marriage, 1898), and the essay collections Der neue Laokoon (The New Laocoon, 1900) and Der neue Mensch (The New Man, 1906). He also wrote several books on the history of art and literature. Bahr died in Vienna on 4 December 1934. He is remembered as one of the most important figures in Austrian literature.
