He is a poet and has published several collections of poetry, including "The Poet's Voice" (1962), "The Poet's Eye" (1966), and "The Poet's Heart" (1970). He has also written several plays, including "The Last of the Red Hot Lovers" (1966) and "The Last of the Red Hot Mamas" (1968). Silverman attended Rutgers University and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948. He then attended Columbia University, where he earned his Master of Arts degree in 1950. Silverman has been married twice. His first marriage was to Ruth Silverman, with whom he had two children. His second marriage was to Judith Silverman, with whom he had two more children. Silverman has been a professor of English at Rutgers University since 1966. He has also served as a visiting professor at several universities, including the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Michigan. Silverman has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry (1966), the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Playwriting (1968), and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry (1970). Silverman married Laura Frances Rothschild in 1945. They had two children, Elaine and Jack. Laura died on March 6, 1988, aged 60. Silverman died on September 19, 2015, aged 89. They are survived by their children, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

1986

Until its closure in 1986, Silverman ran a Bayonne, New Jersey, candy store, called Hersch's Beehive, to provide for his family, while writing hundreds of (published) Beat poems. He also painted and printed poetry chapbooks and pamphlets on the side. In May 2017 the Township of Bayonne named the corner of Avenue A and 29th street Hersch's BeeHive Way commemorating the legendary BeeHive Candy Store.

Born in New York, Silverman was raised in California until he was orphaned at age seven, when he was sent to Jersey City to live with his aunt and grandmother. He served in World War II as a cook and in the Korean War in 1952.
