Holcombe Rucker was an American activist and basketball coach who was born on March 2, 1926 in New York City. He was best known for founding the Rucker Park basketball tournament in Harlem, New York. He was also a mentor to many of the NBA's greatest players, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julius Erving, and Kobe Bryant. Rucker was a graduate of DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx and attended City College of New York. He served in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he returned to New York and began working as a playground director in Harlem. Rucker was a passionate advocate for youth and basketball. He founded the Rucker Park tournament in 1950, which quickly became a popular event for basketball players from all over the city. He also founded the Rucker League, which was a summer basketball league for high school and college players. Rucker was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003. He passed away in 1965 at the age of 39.
