Hugh Greene was a British journalist and broadcaster who served as Director-General of the BBC from 1960 to 1969. He was born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England, UK on 15 November 1910. He was educated at Berkhamsted School and Magdalen College, Oxford. Greene began his career as a journalist in 1933, working for the Daily Express and then the Daily Telegraph. He joined the BBC in 1940, and during World War II he was the BBC's Director of European Services. After the war, he was appointed Controller of the BBC's Third Programme, and then Director of Programmes in 1955. In 1960, he was appointed Director-General of the BBC, a post he held until 1969. During his tenure as Director-General, Greene oversaw the introduction of colour television, the launch of BBC2, and the expansion of the BBC's radio and television services. He also oversaw the introduction of the BBC's first news bulletin in 1964. Greene was knighted in 1967 for his services to broadcasting. He died in London on 19 February 1987.
