Hunein Maassab was a Syrian-American professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Michigan. He was born in Damascus, Syria, and received his medical degree from the American University of Beirut in 1951. He then moved to the United States, where he completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan. Maassab was a pioneer in the field of immunology, and his research focused on the development of vaccines and the study of the immune system. He was the first to develop a vaccine for the common cold, and his work on the development of a vaccine for hepatitis B was instrumental in the development of the first successful vaccine for the virus. Maassab was a professor at the University of Michigan for over 40 years, and he was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1988. Maassab was married to his wife, Mary, for over 50 years, and they had three children. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 88.
