Idris Abdul Wakil was a prominent Zanzibari politician and diplomat. He was the first Prime Minister of Zanzibar from 1964 to 1965. He was also the first Foreign Minister of Zanzibar from 1964 to 1965. Wakil was born in the Sultanate of Zanzibar in 1925. He was educated at the Zanzibar Government School and the University of London. He was a member of the Zanzibar Legislative Council from 1957 to 1964. In 1964, Wakil was appointed Prime Minister of Zanzibar and Foreign Minister. He served in both positions until 1965, when the Zanzibar Revolution overthrew the Sultanate. Wakil was arrested and imprisoned for his involvement in the revolution. After his release, Wakil served as the Ambassador of Zanzibar to the United Nations from 1972 to 1975. He was also a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives from 1975 to 1977. Wakil died in Zanzibar in 2002 at the age of 77. He was survived by his wife and four children.
