Irina Golub began her ballet training at the age of six at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in Saint Petersburg. She graduated from the academy in 1998 and joined the Mariinsky Ballet, then known as the Kirov Ballet. She quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to principal dancer in 2002. Golub has performed in many of the Mariinsky's most famous ballets, including Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Giselle. She has also performed in ballets by George Balanchine, Frederick Ashton, and Kenneth MacMillan. In addition to her work with the Mariinsky, Golub has also performed with the Bolshoi Ballet, the Royal Ballet, and the National Ballet of Canada. She has also appeared in several films, including the 2006 film Anna Karenina. Golub retired from the Mariinsky in 2013 and now works as a ballet teacher and coach. She is married to former Mariinsky principal dancer Vladimir Shklyarov.

In June 2012, Ms. Golub appeared as Hermia in the premiere of the Mariinsky Ballet production of George Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream, a ballet based on Shakespeare's play with music by Felix Mendelssohn.

In October 2012, Ms. Golub married actor and performance artist Andrey Kislitsin. He has appeared in two films, Drink Tea Outside, and Yolki (or Six Degrees of Celebration), a smash hit in its native country, Russia, but yet to be shown in the U.S. The couple tour with the Cirque du Soleil, of which Kislitsin is a member.

She has also appeared in the title role of Prokofiev's Cinderella and as Juliet in the same composer's Romeo and Juliet. In 2001, she first danced the role of Masha (Clara) in Mikhail Chemiakin's controversial production of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker. Golub has also danced the role of Masha in a recent revival of the more traditional 1934 Vasili Vainonen version of the ballet.
