Ismet Inönü was a Turkish statesman who served as the second President of Turkey from 1938 to 1950. He was also the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP) and a co-founder of the Turkish Republic. Inönü was born in Smyrna, Ottoman Empire (now Izmir, Turkey) on 24 September 1884. He was educated at the Galatasaray High School in Istanbul and the École des Sciences Politiques in Paris. Inönü joined the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) in 1908 and was elected to the Ottoman Parliament in 1911. He served as Minister of War in the government of Grand Vizier Said Halim Pasha from 1913 to 1917. Inönü was a key figure in the Turkish War of Independence and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. He served as Prime Minister of Turkey from 1923 to 1924 and from 1925 to 1937. He was elected President of Turkey in 1938 and served until 1950. Inönü was a strong advocate of secularism and democracy in Turkey. He was also a proponent of the country's accession to the European Union. Ismet Inönü died on 25 December 1973 in Istanbul, Turkey. He was 89 years old.
