Ivan Gantschev was a Bulgarian film director, screenwriter, and actor. He was born on 4 January 1925 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He studied at the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia, and graduated in 1950. Gantschev's career in film began in 1951, when he directed his first feature film, The White Horse Inn. He went on to direct several other films, including The Red Horse (1954), The Red Star (1956), and The Red Flag (1958). He also wrote and directed the television series The Adventures of Captain Vrungel (1966-1967). Gantschev was a prolific filmmaker, and his films were often praised for their technical excellence and innovative use of color. He was awarded the Order of Georgi Dimitrov in 1975 for his contributions to Bulgarian cinema. Gantschev was married to actress and singer Mariana Gantscheva, and they had two children. He died on 28 April 2014 in Sofia, Bulgaria, at the age of 89.
