Ivar Stakgold is a 93-year-old mathematician who was born on 13 December, 1925 in Delaware. He is best known for his work in the field of applied mathematics, particularly in the areas of boundary value problems, integral equations, and numerical analysis. Stakgold received his B.S. in mathematics from the University of Delaware in 1947 and his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Maryland in 1951. He then went on to teach at the University of Maryland, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Minnesota. Stakgold has authored or co-authored several books, including "Boundary Value Problems of Mathematical Physics" (1966), "Green's Functions and Boundary Value Problems" (1971), and "Integral Equations" (1972). He has also written numerous articles and papers on applied mathematics. Stakgold has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the National Academy of Sciences Award in Applied Mathematics and Numerical Analysis (1977), the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Prize for Distinguished Service (1985), and the SIAM Award for Distinguished Service (1995).
