J.C. Bitzer was an American cinematographer who worked in the silent film era. He was born on August 19, 1878 in Boston, Massachusetts. He began his career in the film industry in 1906, working as a cameraman for the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company. He quickly rose to prominence, becoming one of the most sought-after cinematographers of the time. Bitzer worked on over 400 films during his career, including some of the most iconic films of the silent era such as The Birth of a Nation (1915), Intolerance (1916), and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920). He was known for his innovative use of lighting and camera angles, and for his ability to capture the emotion of a scene. Bitzer was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on The Big Parade (1925). He was also the first cinematographer to be awarded an honorary Academy Award in 1928. Bitzer retired from the film industry in 1929 and died in 1944. He was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
