J. P. Nettl was a renowned historian and musicologist. He was born in New York in 1926 and studied at the University of Chicago, where he earned his PhD in musicology in 1952. He was a professor of musicology at the University of Pennsylvania from 1956 to 1988. Nettl was a prolific author, writing numerous books and articles on music and musicology. His most famous works include The Study of Ethnomusicology (1968), The Study of Folk Music in the Modern World (1973), and The Western Impact on World Music (1978). He was also a founding member of the Society for Ethnomusicology. Nettl was awarded numerous honors and awards throughout his career, including the National Medal of Arts in 1988 and the American Musicological Society's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992. He died in Philadelphia in 1999.
